Junior Researcher in the Field of Adaptive Optics

About the Position 

HiLASE Centre is seeking a Junior Researcher to join our interdisciplinary team within the ATLAS (Advanced Technologies for Laser Applications in Space) research project. The successful candidate will contribute to pioneering research in adaptive optics, with an emphasis on the design, development, and testing of optical systems with a focus on practical applications such as spaceborne platforms or lasers for optical communication.

This position offers a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of photonics research in a supportive and innovative environment, under the guidance of leading scientists in the field. 

What You Will Do:

As a Junior Researcher, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and contributing to research objectives aligned with the goals of the ATLAS project, both independently and as part of the broader team.
  • Designing, modelling, testing, and optimizing adaptive optics components for their intended use in free space environments.
  • Capability of conducting independent research and implementation of numerical solutions to the general model of laser system in question. Open mindset for exploring new methodologies and technologies.
  • Designing and conducting experiments in the field of adaptive optics. Gathering of experimental data and their analysis.
  • Publishing research results in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at scientific conferences.
  • Contributing to administrative duties and engaging in ongoing professional development.

We Are Looking for Someone with the following skills and competencies:

Essential Qualifications and Experience:

  • A Master’s degree or PhD (or equivalent professional experience) in Physics, Engineering, Optics, or a related field.
  • Research experience in one or more of the following areas: Laser system design and benchmarking or Numerical modelling of complex multi-element systems.
  • Ability to plan and conduct independent research.
  • Self-motivation for achieving the set goals and ability to find the suitable means.
  • Ability to analyze the experimental results and defend their interpretation.
  • Organizational skills with the ability to manage workload and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities, with the capacity to present complex topics clearly.
  • Motivated to explore space applications of laser technologies.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience:

  • General knowledge of laser systems.
  • Experience with MATLAB environment, preferably PDE toolbox implementation.
