Laser Damage Testing Intern – Understanding the Limits of Optical Components

The HiLASE Centre is part of the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences – the country’s largest research institute, with a broad scientific program that includes particle physics, condensed matter and solid-state physics, optics, and plasma physics.

This internship offers students the opportunity to explore a critical challenge in the field of high-energy laser systems: the laser-induced damage resistance of large optical components. While conventional laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) tests are typically performed on small-scale samples with limited beam sizes, these conditions often do not reflect real-world performance in high-energy systems. This project focuses on investigating how testing beam size affects damage threshold values, especially in dielectric mirrors used in optical paths of high-energy laser systems.

What will you be working on?
  • Participation in ongoing research on laser-induced damage thresholds (LIDT)
  • Experimental work with various optical components
  • Investigation of beam size effects on damage performance
  • Exploration of wavelength influence on different types of mirror coatings
  • Hands-on work with diagnostic tools and optical testing equipment
  • Literature research and collaboration with a team of laser and optics experts
Our expectations:
  • Interest in laser physics, optics, or materials science
  • Eagerness to learn and contribute to experimental research
  • Basic understanding of optics (interference coatings) or photonics
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • No prior lab experience required – just motivation and curiosity
What do we offer?
  • Flexible working hours to suit your academic schedule
  • Access to state-of-the-art laboratories and optical testing facilities
  • Opportunity to contribute to applied research with industrial relevance
  • Mentorship and support from experienced researchers
  • Friendly, collaborative, and international research environment
